The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today released the March 2003 preliminary U.S. foreign waterborne transportation statistics.  These statistics are based on the U.S. Bureau of the Census trade data matched to the U.S. Customs vessel entrances and clearances, enhanced by the U.S. Maritime Administration.  Year-to-date figures through March 2003 show an increase in volume of 6% for imports and a decrease of 2% for exports over the same time period for 2002.  The following cargo summary contains value and weight information by type of service on U.S. waterborne imports and exports for March 2003, along with year-to-date figures.  Inbound and outbound in-transit data are not included.

1. Export weight does not include commodities removed from the Waterborne Databank due to     confidentiality restrictions from the U.S. Bureau of the Census.  This restriction has been applied     historically, although not always footnoted.  Value represents the total for all commodities.

2. Figures in total column may vary due to rounding.
