FIELD DESCRIPTIONS:

TS_OPER TS_Operator is a Transportation Lines vessel company

surveyed and assigned a seven digit code by WCSC. The

vessel inventory for each TS_Operator is reported

annually to WCSC and is contained in the Master Vessel

File. The first two digits of the TS_Operator code

denotes the Engineer Division / District code with

the last five digits forming a unique number assigned

                to a particular TS_Operator.

NAME Identifies the TS_Operator company by name.

DBA Identifies the TS_Operators Current operating name.

POC Identifies the responsible party for verification of data.

ADDRESS The street address of the TS_Operator.

CITY The city of the TS_Oprator.

STATE The state abbreviation for the TS_Operator.

ZIP The first five digits, and if available, the last four

digits of the nine digit zip code for the TS_Operator

                address.

AREA Area is the three digit area code for the telephone

                number of the TS_Operator.

PHONE Phone is an eight digit alphanumeric field containing

the telephone number of the TS_Operator, including a "-"

between the first three digits and the last four digits.

DIST District contains a two digit code for the Corps

District number in which the vessel is domiciled (see

                Appendix below).

SERIES Series contains the digit 3,4 or 5 to designate the

series in which this operator would have appeared under

the previous policy of publishing three volumes. The

three volumes were compiled by geographical region as

                follows:

TS-3 Transportation Lines on the Great Lakes System

TS-4 Transportation Lines on the Mississippi River

System and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway

TS-5 Transportation Lines on the Atlantic, Gulf and

                          Pacific Coasts

SERVICE Service specifies the type of service in which the

operator transports goods. These types of services

                are defined below:

1 = Carriage performed for compensation that is

regulated by the Interstate Commerce Commission

                       (ICC).

2 = Carriage performed for compensation, but exempt

                       from regulation by the ICC.

3 = Carriage performed by a private entity where the

vessel and the goods being transported are owned

                       by the same entity.

PRINC_COMM Principal commodities carried by the TS_Operator.

POINT_LOC Points or Localities and Waterways between which or on

                which the TS_Operator operates.

Vessel Category fields (748-850), each contains the number of vessels by

type reported for that particular vessel company.

FL_YR File year identifies the calendar year in which this

                inventory of vessels was compiled.

FIELD DESCRIPTIONS:

VESSEL A unique vessel identification number assigned by

                 Waterborne Commerce Statistics Center (WCSC).

VS_NAME /

VS_NUMBER Used to describe the vessel by name and number.

CG_NUMBER Official number assigned to the vessel by the U.S. Coast Guard

at the time of registration. This number is normally retained

by a vessel throughout the life of the vessel.

VTCC Vessel Type, Construction and Characteristics code, which

describes in general terms the vessel type, construction and

characteristics of the marine structure; e.g. 2A22 represents

the code for a self-propelled liquid bulk tanker constructed

of steel. See Appendix (below) for an explanation of the

                 VTCC codes.

ICST International Classification of Ships by Type was developed

by an ad hoc international advisory group on Maritime

Statistics and completed in 1994. The classification is based

on the construction characteristics of the marine structure

and not upon its particular use or cargo carried at a point

in time. The ICST codes and descriptions and the cross

reference list between the VTCC and ICST codes are provided

                 in the Appendix below.

NRT Net Tonnage is defined as the volume of space available for

the accommodation of passengers and the stowage of cargo,

expressed in units of 100 cubic feet for each net ton. The NRT

is recorded on the vessel's registration papers or it can be

determined as the difference between gross tonnage and the

volume of space used for the accommodation of the vessel

master, officers, crew, navigation and propelling machinery

expressed in units of 100 cubic feet per ton. The NRT should

not be confused with a tonnage capacity because it simply

expresses a volume capacity for passengers and cargo.

Depending on the type of cargo being transported the tonnage

that can be stowed in the volume of 100 cubic feet will vary,

although generally speaking, the total tonnage capacity should

not exceed three times the NRT of the vessel.

HRP Specifies the horsepower rating for that particular vessel.

The figures represent the horsepower rating when the vessel

was new or when the present engine was installed.

REG_LNGTH The register length of the vessel is reported in units of feet

to the nearest tenth. The register length of a vessel is the

length measured on the top of the tonnage deck from the

forepart of the outer planking or plating at the bow to the

afterpart of the sternpost of screw steamers and to the

afterpart of the rudder post of other vessels.

OVER_LNGTH The overall length of the vessel is reported in units of feet

to the nearest tenth. The overall length is the extreme length

of the vessel which would include any structure which extends

beyond the outer planking or plating on the bow or any

structure that extends beyond the sternpost on screw steamers

and to the afterpart of the rudder post of other vessels.

REG_BRDTH The regular breadth of the vessel is reported in units of feet

to the nearest tenth. The register breadth of a vessel is the

breadth at its widest part measured from the outer side of the

planking or plating on one side to the corresponding point on

                 the opposite side.

OVER_BRDTH The overall breadth of the vessel is reported in units of feet

to the nearest tenth. The overall breadth is the extreme

breadth of maximum breadth to the outside of the vessel's

structure. In paddle ships, this includes the paddle boxes.

HFP The height of the highest fixed point on the vessel in units

of feet to the nearest tenth. The height represents the

distance between the waterline of the vessel (when light)

and the highest fixed point on the vessel, such as a pilot

house, mast, etc. If the highest point of a vessel is a
